You have it exactly. It can either look "just right" (if you're real lucky ), or, more likely, it's getting as big as you want it to, due to your size limits imposed by space, weight, etc.

I have a (pre-bonsai) ficus Burtt Davyi 'nana (super dwarf leaves) coming from florida that dbz12fan helped me pick out. Simple clipping would give me a nice bonsai, but I plan to cut it back, literally to the bare trunk to get a better, smaller tree.

It's a matter of preference.
