Dear all,
I started growing bonsai about 1997 due to a brief fascination with the Asian culture. Unfortunately, about 5 years ago, I lost my first trees that I had been working on to pests and neglect due to many job changes and moving around. I am now in much better shape financially and am ready to start the hobby seriously this time. My new wife and I have been immersed in orchids and we are now wanting to try our hands with bonsai. I am wanting to get back into the hobby and am wondering if there are any individuals who are members of the Houston Bonsai Society (here in Houston, Texas). I also just joined the listserv here and think it is awesome. Like I said, I have been out of the hobby for about 7 years and am getting back in. Any helpful advice will be appreciated. Regards, davinci7_gis |

Dav,
You are coming back at a great time. There is so much more info now its amazing. Almost to much. Magazines from every continent, tons of books and kazillions of internet sites not to mention the ability to buy anything bonsai related from vendors and ebay. Now get out your mastercard and go to work...

Welcome back ;o) There are a few members of the Houston society on this forum. I could list them but might get into a bit of trouble ;o( Some of those guys are afraid to let anyone know even what city they live in as some thief might steal their trees ;o) I am sure, however one or two will fess up and let you know. |

Thanks!
Thanks guys and gals for welcoming me back.
I showed a few sites to my wife yesterday afternoon and she was totally thrilled! We are travelling to the texas Hill Country this weekend and are going to try and visit the Jade Gardens in Wimberly, TX. Here is the site:http://www.wimberley-tx.com/~bonsaijg/ If anyone has been there and has anything to say about it, please post a reply. Thanks again, davinci7_gis |

I live here in Houston and would be happy to talk with you. I have been to Jade Gardens and it's a great place. Chuck and his wife are good people and I think you will have a pleasant and rewarding visit. Check your private messages. I look forward to hearing from you. Steve

davinci7_gis,
I am from San Antonio, therefore reasonably close to Jade Gardens...In my humble opinion you will do yourself a great favor to visit Pat and Chuck...they are wonderfull people and very knowledgeable about both the art and horticultural aspects of bonsai and seikei...you will also find they have a great selection of styled trees, stock plants, and all the other supplies you will need...a big plus is the 'Central Texas Bonsai Exhibt' which they have created and maintain on site, featuring many Texas native trees... I just know you will have a great time, take lots of money and plan on spending a decent amount of time to see all you can...also please post your opinion after the visit... Regards Behr ![]() |
