starting from seed

I am new to bonsai.I bought some seeds so that I could start my own trees.Am I heading for trouble? So far I only have one tree. It's a Hawiian Umbrella.I have so much to learn.I thought if I grew trees from seed, they would mature along with me,so to speak. The seeds are-Cotoneaster,Chinese Juniper and Hinoki Cypress.Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The Cotoneaster is supposed to be a good tree for beginners. Can I stratify them in the soil they will sprout and grow in?What about a fungicide? The seeds are in my fridge now,as per instructions from supplier. Thanks.

No, your not heading for trouble at all. The only problem with seeds is that they take years before you have workable stock. There are many bonuses to growing from seeds however. There is a special tie to a tree one has grown from seed.

You seem to have read the instructions well, and there is plenty of more info on the net about sowing each type of seed. Just search the trees name and "seeds" or "from seed".

I think the easiest way to stratify seeds is to plant them outside in containers and let nature do it for you. Then, come spring, you get sprouts (hopefully).

If you feel like "scratching the bonsai itch" while your seeds are growing I suggest picking up an armload of junipers from the garden center. Junipers are also very good beginner plants.
