Starting new growth on a boxwood?
I've got a boxwood that I salvaged while removing them from our yard last year. I put it in a good sized temporary pot to let the roots reestablish themselves. New growth continued on one side and mostly ceased on the other.
I'm considering options to get new growth on some of those dying branches. Because the bark is a bit thick I'm thinking that shaving it down in a few choice locations my give it a chance to sprout. Also, I'm thinking about cutting the dead wood down until I get to some living material. For the most part it seems to be thriving (it's been potting since about last july)... at least on one side of it ![]() Does anybody have any advice? Thanks, andy |

Most likely this is a futile effort, since the branches are dying off. Shaving a dead branch won't do anything, except make it look funny. Dead branches indicate a root zone issue. I suspect the roots below those branches are dead. THey probably can be revived and you will have to incorporate the resulting deadwood into your design. |

If you just collected it last year you should not be doing anything to it other than trying to get it healthy and happy. If the branches are dying then it is not. Generally you want to wait 2-3 years to work collected material.

I agree with Newt, collected material should not be worked for 2 years.

You could cut off anything that's obvously dead so you can see if this is progressive or a one-time dieoff.
If the tree were bouncing back after being collected you could probably work on it, but if you've got some areas of dieback I'd wait a year if not longer. Craig Cowing NY Zone 5b/6a Sunset 37
