Stand Considerations for a Informal Upright Ficus Bonsai

When selecting a stand for my bonsai I take many things into consideration as not just any stand will bring out the best in a bonsai.

The display table or stand must relate to the bonsai that it is presented with in a balanced proportion. In example, a large tree in a powerful container requires a strong table with visual stability, a masculine table to match the masculinity of the tree. On the other hand with a bonsai like my ficus which has many feminine attributes, a fact that figured greatly when I choose the style of pot for it, the stand should also me more feminine.

I have been recently considering changing the stand for this Ficus to a more fitting feminine form. The first picture below is a slightly outdated picture of the Ficus on the original stand. The other pictures are rough virtuals of slightly more feminine stands.

I would greatly appreciate input on these possibilities, keeping in mind the design of the stand in relation to the bonsai and pot as the colors are off.

Will,

From the mind of a novice...

I really do like the low slung wide one better with this tree.It almost seems they where made to go together when compared to the other one(not just because I know they where either). The tree looks better, older and larger on the first one.Your canopy seems to spread out further aswell..The other stand looks ok,but Als' stand is much finer and more interesting with your tree. They just simply look better together, the color is richer in the first aswell.

Will, just as a general statement, I find that most people buy a display table thats just barely large enough for the pot. The size you show in the second picture seems to be to be right. Also, I like the complimentary curves of the pot and the table legs.

It is hard tell because the perspective on the virt between the tree/pot and table are very differnet and makes the table look a lot larger that it would be. I dont like the table legs that have an outward curve with the pot. This constrasts to much with the pot. I would like to see a leg that has a more inward curve. I think either a cherry, rosewood or walnut stand would be good color choices. I also think the size of the new stand should be close to the original stand, to slightly smaller. This will keep the proportion of the tree/pot/stand. I will be interested in other thoughts.

Thanks Will for the opportunity. We don't get much action on displaying trees.

Will,

I think the second pot is just a bit too "chinese" style for that tree.

But i could be wrong.

Seriously,i like the first stand better.Whether it's chinese or japanese or taiwanese or american or european......it's a damn nice stand and it looks good sitting under your bonsai.Personal preferance, only.I think the second stand is too tall.

I wouldn't say "yuk". One might quibble over the ornamentation, but the size is good. It's a table, not a "perch".

Will, you mentioned on another post that you have acquired the Willi Benz book. An excellent reference. Check pages 77, 85, and 88 for some good examples of tree, pot and display table.

Mike,

Thanks, you are quite right. I like the stand on page 77. The stand on page 85 is almost exactly like the one I use now.

Thanks again,

Will
