Squirrels
I have a problem with squirrels burying black walnuts in my growth pots. Cannot shoot them, since I live in a development, don't want to grease Fred or Ethel next door.
Have just spent thrity dollars on a live trip, which seems to be of total disinterest to them. Have tired hazel nuts and peanut butter as bait with no success. Any suggestions? jg |

squirrels
I visited a nursery that used plastic covers that were cut to fit the trunk of the tree in the pot, that had sizeable ventelation holes cut in them, so as to allow for watering, but small enought that squirrels could not dig under them. I don't know where they can be purchased, but will ask.

How about putting some of that wire cloth that has squares about 1/2" over the pots? You can cut out small areas for the trees, it bends easily, and squirrels can't chew through it.
Just a thought... Joanie |

Are you allowed to rat bait those critters in the States?...
I have a Fred and Ethel living across the road... He's the self appointed Mayor of my street.... I wouldn't mind letting him have a Scud or two over his fence... "Friendly fire" is all part of war so don't feel so bad about it.. Happy growing |

The squirrel dilemma has struck me also....seems they think burying acorns in pots is easier than in the hard ground. Now, pot covers might just work, but with 100+ pots, I don't like squirrels that much
I have 2 dogs that love chasing the squirrels, (as Al will attest), but they are indoor dogs during the day. So I have stooped to the pellet gun. ( I know, I know, nature has it's place, just not with an 80 dollar tree completely dug up). I got the kind of gun that pumps, and have found that a couple pumps delivers a noticeable sting to the little suckers. Not killing, just deterring....never knew squirrels could go so vertical. Anyhow, after a few rump shots, haven't seen a squirrel since. Just a thought.Scott |

Hey guys, i hope this helps.
I got my first bonsai plants last weekend ( 2x Juniperus Procumbens) and my dad is going to be making me a small greenhouse room with the proper shade cloth. and temporarily i have made a small type of enclosure thing. I made like a shade cloth column around it. I placed four posts (to make the points of a square) then i wrapped green shade cloth material around and just stapled it onto the small wooden posts. It works very good, and even keeps my mums Scottish terrior away from it. I guess it all depends on how feesable it is for the condition. I hope this helps. Michael |
