Squirrel Problem

I moved to a new location about the time I joined this forum. The place is infested with squirrels. They are constantly digging up plants to place a pecan in a pot or just turning as pot over as they run down the benches.

I have a lot of seeds that are due in any day. i made a seed box to sow them outside. I need something to keep the pests (squirrels) out of the box. I plan to put hardware cloth on the box until they sprout but will have to take it off so the plants can grow.

My question is.. will the red pepper or any of the other peppers have any effect on the tender new seedlings.

I have also used moth balls in the past to keep stray dogs off the porch. Will these have any effect on the plants?

Thanks for listening.

Hey timeless,
I too have had a problem with squirrels in the past. I made a habanero pepper solution that did the trick. The afternoon after applying the solution, I noticed a few scrape marks on the soil of one of my plants, but that was it. I can only imagine the little rodent squrming from the intensity of the heat. Also, you will need to reapply the solution after it rains. Good luck

Hate to say it but the only real squirrel repellent I have ever seen is made by Smith & Wesson.

Ive had good luck sprinkling alittle cayenne pepper in the soil surface. After awhile they get the idea they cant go around there anymore.

hmmm in australia we dont hace squirrels (thank god)
but we do have possums, which are remedied by a dog.the little ringtails get busted by the dog and get barked at they just freeze then they get relocated by the good fellows at the RSPCA.

oh and Ron, i dont mean any disrespect (even if you are being sarcastic) but guns bring more trouble than a tiny little squirrel could. i know im reading into this too much but i dont think i could ever bring myself to shoot a little animal because they cause a little bit of trouble, when it can be remedied so much easier.

Yep you are reading a bit too much into it.
Squirrels are a major problem in some areas of the US. They are after all just a rat with a fuzzy tail. Just about the same kind of problem Australia has with the kangaroo. A neat looking animal but mostly shot on site.
You ever try another remedy on them ;o)
Squirrels are cute but cause a lot of damage. Cute doesn't excuse them

Being an avid archer I put together some blunt tips and use them on a longbow that is only a 45lb pull. After a couple months of giving my local tree rats some good spankings, they pretty much detour my property now.

Tree Rats or bonsai, I made my choice. Think of squirrels as the rabbits in Australia that were introduced and practically detroyed the local ecosystems there.

Wish i could use my 12 gauge to practice my shooting on them for duck season, but i dont think the neighborhood homes association, or the pd, would like that too much!
