Question Spruce (Picea) Tree Question

I have a birds nest spruce, resently styled.
I know that with pines you need to pinch the candles to encourage back budding.
do you do this with spruce as well?
it is putting on new growth but it does not have "candles"

thanks
-Paul

Paul:

I am looking for the same answers. There's a beginning on Andy Smith's (Golden Arrow) Catalog .

Scroll down past the ponderosa pics.

Greetings from DC and the WBC! (I'm in Heaven already!)

Spruce (Picea) Tree Question

I just did one for the Styling Contest. I pinched off all the new growth about half way and it has started back budding all over.

Pinching Spruce is different than other conifers in thechnique.

Here is what I do: Wait till the growth extends to about 3/4", grasp gently the base of the new shoot with one hand, and the end of the shoot with the other. Now pull straight out and the shoot will break at or around where it is supported. Try not to tear off any needles and if you succeed in this the pinching procedure will leave a nice tight bundle of needles with out the common evidence that they have been pinched. New buds will form just below where the new growth started in the spring. They will number anywhere from three to six. Remove the upper pointing and lower pointing buds about the middle of July.

The following spring you will have to remove the stub that will remain from the shoot you pinched this spring. Spruce are time consuming and often difficult and sometimes take tedious methods to deal with.
