Earl: You got snow our tempratures droped from almost 90 degrees to the 60's over night. Raining today so the trees are happy. Unfortunatly so are the weeds , oh well roundup will take care of the ground weeds. Your trees look good with a powdering of snow, I hope that you suffer no dammage.

Nice trees, Earl. What's the latest news on the water war up there in Klamath falls? The last I heard was that the feds had shut off all the water to the farmers and many were having to sell their land to survive. All of this for the sucker fish supposedly.

Re: Springtime in Klamath Country

Ripsgreentree: The rest of my trees are in the greenhouse. I didn't want to stop the budding and leafing on the deciduous trees. I have left out the junipers and pine. Figure they can use the cold weather after wintering in the greenhouse.

Tony: We went from drought last year to above normal moisture (witness the snow that we're still getting!) so they say there is enough water for the farmers this summer. Plus, the Feds commissioned a high level study of water and suckers, and lo and behold, the study showed what we all knew already, that suckers thrive in shallow, warm water, not deep, cold water. So shutting off the water to the farmers and keeping the lake and rivers artificially high probably hurt the suckers! And, yes, quite a few farmers went belly up last summer. Now everybody is suing Uncle Sam...

Good to hear that there is plenty of water for all. Many of the extreme environmental moves [such as this one] have nothing to do protecting the environment. There are several groups that are hell bent on driving people off the land and they will use any means possible to do so.

Earl: This sounds like good planing to me Do you have a favorite specie that you work with. I personally love the five needle white pines but very few will servive our summer heat. I curantly have about five diffrent cultivars that I graft onto j-black with some success. This year I finally have tridents with sufficent size and rootage to start training in pots. In the next few years I am going to have some great trident forrests with trunks from one to five inches.

Re: Springtime in Klamath Country

ripsgreentree: A year ago I would have answered "juniper trees". If you count them in the pic, I think there are around 6, if you count the wanna bes. But as I mentioned elsewhere, I have had alot of trouble keeping them compact and getting decent growth out of them. Hopefully I have solved that with different soil, and more sun this summer. Now, though, I would have to say I'm enjoying alot of trees that I haven't had before. I have just acquired a Hornbeam and Linden and a couple quince (the quinces are definitely potensai). So I don't think I have a favorite right now.

I admire the patience with the pine. They should be great. I'm afraid at 63 years of age, I don't have the will power to start stuff that won't even be to the potting stage in five years! I gave up on Japanese and Trident maples because of the dry heat here. While you guys have more heat, I think we get the clear undilluted sun at 4200' that fries many maples, etc. Just ordered an Amur Maple to see if it will survive.
