Spring has sprung early this year.

While out watering the trees this afternoon I noticed the Seiju Elm, Trident Maples and Pin Oaks are starting to break bud.

This is about 3 weeks early for my trees as they usually start to break bud last week of August, first week of September.

I was wondering what the other aussies who post on this forum are seeing with their trees, I'd be really interested to compare notes.

Ross.

Nothing from my lot yet - not even that elm you helped me pick from A-Z last summer

Definitely feels close though. A few trees down at the local nursery were starting to swell and were close to breaking.

Do you reckon it was the rain pattern - nothing for a while, that that real wet patch?

Hey, I remember that elm, and you

The above average rainfall we've had this winter and the warmish weather this last week will definitely start things rolling.

Maybe we'll catch up at Tims another time.

Hey mine too, it is a bit early for this zone(im in the same zone as you) but my elms and celtis are pushing growth too. My Japanese maple woke up in the middle of winter... dunno why just did.

I'm in Brisbane and up here we had a very late start to winter when the night time temps "plumeted" to around 6c for a couple of weeks. Right now we're hovering around 10c at night with daytime temps at around 25 to 28c.

Most of the elms and celtis retained their leaves this year and are now breaking bud again after a very brief rest, particularly the celtis. Buds on the crabapple are literally quivering with the intention of breaking very soon.
Bring it on!!

At first it struck me as odd that the trees are leafing out early since this winter was so unusually cold for you guys down there(Was it cold all winter?). But maybe the cold caused the trees to obtain the necessary number of chilling hours earlier than usual, thus they started growing early?

Miker, this winter is like a winter of old, cold and wet. We havent had a winter like this one for years, last winter came and went and you'd have been hard pressed to know it except that the trees lost their leaves.
