sparrow attack !!
Hi friends,
This mornin I saw up to 5 sparrows on my Larches, first I sceared them away, but when they came back later I photographed them. At leased I've shown them that I styled the trees in a fly through way. I hope the branches and twigs are strong enough to hold them?? Does anybody know what they want out of my Larches?? Thanks, Wessel

They're either eating bugs, ingesting grit, or just exhibiting territoriality. The last is the most harmful, since their squabbling can damage branches. Not a huge danger, but it can happen. For the most part, I wouldn't worry about it, though.

I got home Weds night and the sparrows, blackbirds or whatever had all but dug my J White Pine out of its rather shallow pot. (Why is it always my best tree
![]() ?:-(So much so that the roots were exposed and damaged a bit. Good thing it's well tied in and healthy. I've slipped it into a larger pot and covered it with drainage mesh again. I suspect its the young uns looking for an easy meal this time of year or having a dust bath perhaps. They also been digging in a big bag of sphagnum moss I keep beside the deck. They also sit on one tree eating the cotoneaster berries off another later in the year which necessitates quite regular pot cleaning as you can imagine. TimR

I have had bird problems this year to the worst extent in many years...they have randomly been digging, throwing soil every which way - does not seem to matter whether weather has been wet or dry......On the advice of a friend, I have hung several CD's around, and that seems to have curbed their activity somewhat....seems that they are wary of surfaces that are highly reflective.
I am always sure to relocate the CD's at least once a week. Hope this helps and good luck! Tom |

Awww you guys and your sparrows and blackbirds. Quit yer bellyaching!! You ought to have to worry about a half dozen or so rhode island red hens! A few years ago my yard was the site of the infamous Chicken War. The hens would get on shelves, not only scratching through the soil in the pots, but also knocking trees off the shelf. And to add insult to injury the bantam hen would lay eggs under one of my junipers!
More than one arguement with the wife over her chickens, so I ended up putting a chicken wire fence up around the tree area (looked tacky as all get out and the wife hated the look since you could see it when you came up the driveway). The next year I built new shelves in a different part of the yard. The chickens seem content now to scratch around and lay under the shelves. Bill |

Now this song cracks me up every time:
http://sniff.numachi.com/~rickheit/...tiBANTCOCK.html It's about a bantam. I haven't got a problem with birds. Only the bravest venture into my garden. The 6 cats do an excellent job! Al

Ever really thought about what your kitty is actually doing when it's doing such an excellent job:
http://www.wildbirds.com/protect_cats.htm http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fwt/back...ber98/cats.html I note this because, I have a sporadic CAT problem in my backyard. Free roaming cats in my neighborhood have killed many kinds of more beneficial wildlife in my backyard that I've been relying on to keep insects down. The cat thing is intermittment, though, as my Bull Terrier is 10 years old, he's a dedicated cat hater and is still pretty fast out the back door... |

I find that mice, squirrels and birds regularily rip the moss and young shoots from my bonsai every spring -they must be using it to line their nests. i find that keeping the bonsai outside near the back door to my garden discourages this, as people walk in and out all the time and it scares the critters away. Still no permanent solution yet though....
