Sowing Jack Pine Seeds

Hi there,

I'm very new to bonsai cultivating. I have been studying about the growing process but I have found that each different specie of plant requires different conditions. I have 7 Jack Pine seeds that I will be growing (allowing me some room for error I suppose). I have soaked each for 24 hours and cold stratified them for a full week now in a damp cloth. I have a tray with drainage holes in the bottom, I have read that there needs to be drainage holes because the bonsai don't grow well if the water sits in the tray. I have purchased a normal type of potting soil and a bag of fine sand. I am assuming I make a bottom layer of soil and on top fill with a thin layer of sand. I then sow the 7 lines evenly in the sand (i have a big tray for this), and place each seed in its own sown line. Then do I put soil on top of the sand from this point? Also should i be keeping this outside in direct sun, under a tree in the shade, or perhaps indoors by a window?

I have been searching for these specific answers but I haven't had much luck finding them. I found this forum which I am most thankful for. I have read many posts and I have already learned much more than I was looking for which is great! I will definitely be frequenting this forum at work. Any advice you can give a newcomer to this wonderful art of bonsai growing would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

brad

Great! Thanks that site is just what i needed as far as sowing.

However on lighting and watering it has no information, could someone drop their 2 cents in? I just planted my seeds this morning in direct sunlight and I plan to water them everyday.

Is this the right course of action to take with this specie of plant?

Should I be using miracle grow, or some type of fertilizer(maybe tomatoe fertilizer)?
