Souvenir Ficus From Florida

When I was in Florida, I found this ficus (it was in a rectangular mica pot) at Jupiter Bonsai. It followed me home about a week ago, and I have since put it in a more flattering pot.

This is the original front.

However, I find myself very tempted by the "root on root on root" style of the existing back.

I also like the better profile that the trunk has from this view.

Opinions?

I am also planning to (gently) lower most of the larger branches (no surgery required) to open up the foliage.

It is my long-term plan to "widen" the tree by encouraging horizontal growth.

Any ideas about this?

Thanks.

Bart,
Nice ficus! I agree about the new front. I also agree that a wider canopy for this tree will suit it very well. If you do go wider I think the height of the canopy should stay just about where it is now. Just simply out on the sides and rounded to the current height. As it sits now (to my tastes) it is a bit tall for the width.

Good luck with this one and please keep us updated. I just LOVE ficus!

My thinking exactly!

You must be a genius!

(If you love ficus, wait till I post my next pix - a trunk chop - from underneath!) (On another tree)

(Been somewhat slow on postins lately. Computer died. Bigtime - replaced by vendor.)

Yes I do love Ficus! And speaking of trunk chop, I did one this past weekend myself. I will post a couple of pics in another thread.
