Hi!
Well you can't get cuttings from them because they don't send roots, so I don't know how they tolerate rootpruning. I have collected two sorbus and they both were died after a week . I don't know much about rowans but I would guess that they don't back bud very easily. All what I have seen have been in informal upright style. |

Hi Hitza,
i have two that i collected about a year ago and there doing fine but im just having a hard time getting them to make branches instead of just lots of leafs.I have found that they bud back very well,i found mine on an old house foundation in the middle of a paddok when i was walking in the country so far i have collected 2 from there and there is about another 5 that look like there worth collecting. Cheers Carl

You've got me worried now.
I'm going to have to go outside now (it's dark) and take a good look, because I'm pretty damn certain the two I have growing have branches! I find them very sturdy, resilliant trees. Ok I've been outside and (phew) there they were, branches. And just to prove it , I've take a photo (flash, because it's almost 10pm here)... I prune it just like the rest and it looks to me like it grows branches exactly like other trees...

Carl,
I assume you have a young tree and that's the reason you have no branches yet. I think what you are calling branches and what fell off last fall are actually compound leaves. Cutting the leaf stem won't help to get branches. That will only cause a brown dead area where you cut the leaf in half. Here's what I'm talking about using Jeremy's tree as an example. #1 is a branch. #2 is a compound leaf. Tony |

Daytime shot of the same tree - today...
This tree is about 4 years old, 2 years in the ground. Give them time, they'll grow...

And if you just let them grow then for 5 months without any cutting - this happens...
