Soil for Shohin

In Morten Albeks book, he says to use spagnum peat moss as a main ingrediant in the soil. He also states that the peat moss in Europe may be different than in the US. Does anyone use peat moss in their soil? If not what does your shohin soil consist of? Can I just cut up some fresh spagnum moss and add it to the soil to help retain moisture?

I ask so many questions because I've just gotten into this world of shohin and don't want my trees drying out, which can be a problem during the summer in my area.

Our peat moss is darker and finer than the European peat moss. (I just found a source locally for European and intend to try it)

You can use fine akadama, it's a very decent water retaining material. I have also used the Aussie Gold fine mix, for orchids. It works in a well draining mixture for shohin, and also for mame.

In Canada for my shohin and mame i use fine Akadama, Peat moss, pumice and grit. it works good for me cause it doesnt dry out or get waterlogged. i dont think its good to use fresh sphagnum moss but the dried moss is good for the roots.

Coffee

Where I live the summer temps are very high average 28 Celsius.
The mix I use is equal parts of. Fine grade akadama sifted, fine grade crushed granite sifted, and Choir peat ( coco peat husks from the coconut )I have used this for about two years now.
I find it very good. We have just come though our hottest summer on record with temps going over 35 Celsius quite regularly.
Before I could get Akadama. I used a high grade general potting mix with the other ingrediants. I had used this for 20+ years. Hope this helps with you high temps. Yours in Bonsai Pup.
Ps I have just started reading Morten's book.
