I worry more how it affects you and your family. Mr. Kamiya, Boon Manakitivipart's teacher in Japan just died last February at the age of 52 from lung cancer. He is survived by his wife and two children and many beautiful trees which now will find new homes. The trees are fine.

Sincerely,
Howard

I have heard that trees living by the side of the road quite enjoy the fumes given off by the passing vehicles ( carbon dioxide I believe ), so maybe they don't mind the occasional puff too.

actually its quiet the opposite with street tree's some tree's arent hardy enough to handle the pollution. that place i work uses platinus acerfola's for street tree's whoch are polution tollerant and respond well to pruning.

Spoonman,

I know quite a few bonsaists who smoke like chimneys, yet they have very healthy trees. I would have to assume that cigarette smoke doesn't contain the levels of fluorocarbons (sp?) of car exhaust, and definitely not the volume. Probably insignificant to the bonsai in a horticultural sense.
I have to agree with the previous post though. I worry more about the human reaction.

Best regards,

John (a lifelong non-smoker, so what do I know)

Ginkgos are also widely used for urban landscaping due to their resistance to pollutants. I too am a smoker (hopefully not for long though), but I adamently believe that the addiction is also deleterious to my plants. If nothing else, the particulate matter that eventually lands on the plants affects their ability to photosynthize. This may have a very small, seemingly inconsequential effect, but over the years.... Of course this can be alleviated by dusting or cleaning off the leaves more frequently. Other than that I do use tobacco (in its unsmoked form) as an organic insecticide, which I have had some success with.
