Sick Spruce

Question for anyone with knowledge about Spruces.

I just got a Colorado Blue Spruce that someone gave me about 3 months ago. It is quite healthy, it is in a plastic rectangular pot only because I didn't think it needed to be repotted. I am waiting till it's the right time to repot or when I get sick of the pot that it's in. Been fertilizing regularly, and it is constantly throwing out healthy new shoots.

The problem is, every time I pinch it back the new growth to keep it manicured and in its original size and shape, it goes through about three weeks with all those places that I pinched back turning brown.

What's the deal?>

Should I keep it out of the sun after I pinch it back?

Mahalo,
Harold

I don't think the tree is sick? Do you?

It sounds like you may not be pinching it right. The growing tip of spruce and cedar can be pinched out while it is still lime green and succulent. If you pinch too soon, it will tear, if you pinch too late the whole bud will come off. Usually this means you'd want to pinch about the time the bud elongates to the size of cuff button or a large bean.

You can prune at most any time back to buds that are growing in the direction you want new growth to appear, but be careful not to cut the needles. Most conifers (juniper, spruce, cedar, many pines) will turn brown if you cut through the needles.

If you're doing that all correctly, then do try moving it out of full sun after you have pinced it back and see if it makes any difference.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Matt

I think I have been pinching it the right way. What you explained is exactly what I have been doing.

What I will do is try to let it grow out to healthy status and show you both healthy growth and how it looks after I have pinched it.

You may be able to pick out something I am missing.

Mahalo,
H

Anyone else have a clue or else had the same problem?

Hi Harold,

I pinch back my 2 Chamaecyparis regularly to encourage dense growth. I've never had a problem with browning... until now.

I use the same method as you, on my bonsai (on a slate) and on material in training (in the ground).

The last time i pinched both trees, the one on the slate went brown on the tips within days, but the one in the ground was fine. Both get the same amount of sun, wind etc, (which happened to quite a bit of each as it happened this time) so the only difference can be water. I am thinking the one in the ground was able to get more water quicker to replace what was being lost from the pinched tips.

I don't know if this is how things work or not, but if it is then perhaps you are having the same problem, especially in your locale, ie hot.

Regards,
