Shimpaku: Winter Color

Today was the first opportunity I have had to get out and start looking at my trees. They have been buried all winter under snow and ice, one of the worst winters we have had in twenty years or so.

Not too long ago someone was wondering if their Juniper was OK because it had some bronze colored foliage. Here is one of my Shimpakus in winter color. This is normal for trees kept out in the weather ---- where they belong incidentally.

This little tree was given to me as a gift in the form of a rooted cutting a number of years ago by the late Ray Boardman.

Vance,
even down here in Tx. where the winters are hardly winters, my shimpaku will turn an almost purple hue while it's in its dormancy state. When I read that post you were referring to, I thought about the fact that it just might be a dormant color.

You guys have had it rough this year, I'll admit that. Hope you will have a half way decent Spring soon.

I echo the rough winter. I've been trying to check the trees in the coldframe on a regular basis, but they're still frozen in pretty well. Maybe I'll dig out the Shimpaku to show its winter color.
