Serissa trunk problem?

First off, I apologize for the poor resolution...I don't want to cause any headaches...the tree is otherwise healthy, but I have noticed this dark black color on the trunk....I don't think it is algae...it will not come off with a stiff brush...just wonder if anyone has experienced a similar occurrence with Serissa. Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Tom

The soil looks dark and wet from the pix, does this stay thay way for long? If so, could be mold/mildew. Never had this on any of mine.

It has spent the winter months in our university greenhouse and maybe the staff has been a bit overzealous regarding watering.
