I have a big serissa, they are semi-tropical and do well inside if humidity, watering, temperature and light are to their liking. But these four things are difficult to monitor at times though so I personally would not suggest a serissa for a beginner. Even my old tree can be tempermental, when it is brought in for the winter, it drops more than half its leaves which can be disconcerting.

If you want something easier to care for and which will do especially well indoors, most any species of ficus would be really good. They can tolerate low humidity and light for the most part and as long as they are planted in well draining soil they aren't easily overwatered. So serissa is okay indoors but might be more trouble than it is worth, figs will be much more rewarding in the short term and less likely to die on you
