Well . . . I started a bunch of seeds last year: giant sequoia, coast redwood, and dawn redwood. They all did great at first, but I lost all the giant sequia to damping off and all the coast redwoods and dawn redwoods to some mishaps in the fall and over the winter.

All but one, actually. My wife discovered one of them putting out new growth last week, so I moved it to a pot on the back porch where I can keep a close eye on it.

I hope to try again eventually, but I need a better location for working with them.

sequoia

I have a 5 foot metasequoia that is waiting to be air layered later this spring.
It is difficult to get nebari on sequoia as they grow like telephone poles. To obtain the desirable base flare, you must not remove lower branches! Let everything low down grow as it wants until you obtain the trunk you are looking for.

They need sun, but not the heat of summer. Mid day and afternoon shade is best. And don't let the soil get bone dry - ever.
