A Second Saga Of The Boxwood

On October 28 2002 I separated an Air layer of a Boxwood, and placed it in an 8 inch plastic Bulb pot.
On March 23, 2003, I checked the roots and there was a small amount of roots. I decided to plant this Boxwood in a plastic Colander (similar to the idea of the Vance Wood Planter). The loose Bonsai soil seems to give the roots plenty of oxygen, which seems to be the key to wonderful root growth. Judge for yourself in this series.

The first picture is the green plastic colander. Notice that no roots have ventured out of the holes. I believe that is due to the fact that roots will avoid light. They will turn away and head for darkness.

This is the underside.of the roots. You can see the branch which I had separated from the mother tree. I left it on for stability, but now it was time to remove it. I cut off about 2 inches of the mother tree branch.

Lastly, the Boxwood planted in a Mica pot for further growth of the foliage!

Excellent work! How long did it take to achieve the layer on the boxwood?

Ralph:
I just went and checked an article I wrote on air-layering for the IBC. I started the air layer on July 13, 2002 and removed it on October 28, 2002.

If you go to that article you can see this same tree just before separating it from the mother tree.

Caqrl, I will have to say that your collander sure looks alot better than mine! I, too, have been trying collanders, but mine are ghastly looking yellows and greens; real embarrasements! I will have to say that they sure seem to work well, though. I'm theorizing that tree roots need both air and moisture and, to the degree that both can be provided together, root growth is optimized. Same conclusion you and Vance have also arrived at, apparently. Recently I found some plastic storage boxes at Walmart that are about 12 quart capacity and have lots of holes in the sides. Kind of like rectangular collanders. And, mercifully, white. I bought a bunch of them and drilled two 3/4" holes in the bottom of each. I think they are just about perfect for grow-boxes. Time will tell.

And, oh yes, thanks for an ineresting and educational submittal.

Thanks, Fredl;
If you haven't used those new grow boxes yet, why not pick up an acrylic spray paint in green or your preffered color and spray the outside of them.
I have found that the acrylic paint melts into the plastic and becomes part of the structure....

Best regards!

Hi fellas,

Have either of you concidered aquatic plant baskets for ponds? I have been using them for the last couple years and have found that the roots establish very nicely in them.

Here is something similar to what I use.

pond baskets

I get mine at Home Depot or Menards for 3-4 dollars for the bigguns. (13 inch squares) they also come in 8 inch rounds 10 inch squares as well,

Paul
