Seasonal care for my air layered maple?
Okay, the roots "took." Many of the branches are throwing new leaves. ALL of the branches have what "looks like" healthy petioles.
Two branches have thrown REALLY long stems. One has 8 new internodes. The other has 4. Now that it has survived the cut and pot (and re-repot....due to wrong soil first time) I ....assume ...... that this leaf flush is the 2nd seasonal flush like when you leaf-cut. Should the extra long shoots be clipped back to force more growth into the lower petioles or is that how it even works? I have been letting them grow to feed the roots, but just wonder if MORE leaves would sprout lower on branches. The NEW leaves tend to be at the ends of branches. Is it likely that any petioles that do NOT open this year WILL open when the tree comes out next spring? |

Hey Kazoo,
I'd just let it grow this year without any additional distubance. Keep it sheltered from strong sun, and over winter as you would any J. maple in your area. Good luck Brian
