SAVE THE BABY TREES!

oooh! I am laughing so hard I have tears in my eyes!

Quote:
The Department of Agriculture has so far cut down and chipped an estimated 1,000 ``significant'' trees of 2 inches or larger in diameter, along with countless baby trees, in an effort to stop a possible infestation

Talk about "putting the spin on a story!"

``We feel the state tried to get away with something that was illegal,'' Denke said.

``And in this situation, 48 of the 51 homeowners have already given in,'' he said. ``It's sad.''

So True.

I didn't mean to downplay the plight of the homeowners in this mess. I have been following this story for about a year now.

It was the unique phrase, "baby trees" that caught my attention. It really doesn't apply to plants, and certainly the loss of a larger, established tree is more environmentally significant. I keep wondering what possessed the writer to use "baby trees" and I find it hard not to suspect there is an element of journalistic spin doctoring. The phrase certainly conjures up connotations of innocence and fragility against a foil of buzzing machinery.

I think this ("baby trees" mentality) is the same type of thinking that would lead to the conclusion that bonsai is cruel.

Regards,

Matt

baby trees

I have to agree with you Matt no one would pay any attention if the journalist had said seedlings. This word spin to the point of, almost untruthfulness, is fast becoming the norm with our news media.

not only in the media though.
i hear people saying it everywhere:
baby trees,baby plants,cars,trucks,houses,even planets!
this anthropomorphisizing(is that a word?)seems to be going hand in hand with the recent falling into superstition.
like that womam who talks to dead animals on animal planet.

I know, Matt. It's every where these days, you can't get away from it. It's the same way when some politician wants to pass a new law. It's always to save the children.

What gets me is that the trees they destroyed weren't even infected, just trying to stop the spread. Isn't there a way to destroy the beetle without making saw dust out of the trees?
