A rose is a rose...

So I wound up over on GW for first time in a vrey very VERY long time (and, by the way, I won't be returning, as the pop up ads and other stuff has gotten worse) Anyway, ran across this photo of a rose bonsai that is a pretty good example of what can be done with older material:

Brian is in my club. He brought the old grizzled rose to the last meeting where I was lucky enough to photograph it and it is truly one of a kind. Stunningly different than any other potted plant I have ever seen. Good pull Rock.

Cover the blossoms at the top of the photo with your hand and there is still plenty to appreciate. It has great potential as a bonsai. Some wiring would help, I am sure, but it's excellent material.

Regards,

Matt

Matt:

I see your point. Some training might be in order. It's got a nice ganrled trunk. I am not sure if leaf reduction would be possible. The blossoms don't bother me at all since I like flowering bonsai.

This rose is a rose in a bonsai pot, not a bonsai rose. It is an estimated 75 years old, and stays the same size because with roses, the canes are cut each year and regrow. There are no leaf reduction attempts that he shared with me. I would imagine that it is what it is, and should be enjoyed at face value. He is not trying to develop it into anything. The larger task is preserving it's life after so long, and identifying the particular variety, which he has not been able to do so far.

Dear RockM

So nice You put it on , Thank You !
For a while i am try-ing to get an old rose in a bonsaipot !
Still it is a not so big pot and has this year flowers for the first time.
This Rose was in full ground for about 9 years , i dug it up
put in the pot and cut it as far as i dear , waited ,.
Now it has several flowers at the highest place ,and some backbuds
very low , not wild , and has deadwood !!!!!
Do Youi think it is possible to cut the long branches back and get flowers ?
I love a Rose bonsai !!!!!
Kind regards
Morea
