I think Al said in another post somewhere that this is his favourite time of year. Well, he lives in the sun, and I live in the UK, where no-one in their right mind would call January their favourite time of year, unless they had webbed feet and could quack.
Still, I know what he means. Now is a good time to contemplate the future and the joys and surprises that spring and summer might bring to our endeavours. I have an idea. It's a bit wacky, bit different, but hopefully an artistically sound design that will tell a story, not be a curiosity. My design calls for a raft JWP to be made - not in the raft style, but I will need the tree to develop roots from existing trunk and/or branches to succeed. Now, of course, JWP are notoriously funny about their roots - chop off too much and they die, air-layer one and you'll be collecting your pension before you sever it etc, etc. HOWEVER, does anyone know how likely it'll be for me to be able to achieve this horticulturally and any tips for success? Rooting hormones, using sphagnum moss? Regards, Fish.

I just ran across this. Probably it spun off the radar before anyone figured out what JWP meant.
Yes, you should be able to get Japanese White Pine to layer for you if you allow sufficient time. Rooting hormone is a must, and it would be a good idea to apply a wire tourniquet beneath the upper cut in the ring of peeled bark. The bark should be peeled all the way to wood. Sounds extreme, but that is through the bark, cambium, that whitish sapwood, right to the wood. If the trunk is low enough, you could ground-layer it right in the pot. Good luck, Matt
