Rooting Hormone?

I collected a tree in here in the fall...should I water it with rooting hormone right now (not sure bc I know it wont grow new roots until spring) or should i just wait till spring to administer it.

thanks, harry

What- kind of tree is it?

Where- do you live?

How- did you plant it after collection?

When- is your first frost?

Why- didn't you wait 'til spring?

Forget the rooting hormone. Auxin (IBA mostly) is a hormone for stimulating non root tissue to form roots, such as in cuttings and airlayers. It does not stimulate root tissue to form new roots. In some studies IBA actually inhibited new root growth from root tissue.

If you are going to keep it in your greenhouse, you will have to make sure it stays below 40F for most of the winter, or you will interfere with its dormant cycle. You could fertilize once now with a good soluble fertilizer, then continue with regular fertilization when it warms up in the spring. Keeping the roots warm, 50 to 60F, but the top cool will encourage root growth into the winter, but then you must moderate winter temperatures or you will damage these new roots. Keep it above 28F if possible. This can be accomplished with a propagation heating mat.
