The only water I use is when I soak the roots with "Superthrive" and then I soak the roots with the apropiate "Mycorrhizae" then I use a mixture of gravel & akadama and plant it in a pre-bonsai pot of ceramic, never, never plastic or mica pots which for some reason or other doesn't work. Then keep the plant in the shade for a couple of weeks. In only one season the tree can be transplanted again if necessary.

That's interesting how long have you been doing this? As to the Mycorrhizai, its true this stuff is good for the roots, trouble is you have to have new roots to absorb the stuff, and it is not possible to have every species of Mycorrhizai for every possible tree. The planter stimulates the tree to form its own Mychorrhizai, the best kind. How many do you lose doing it your way?

I started my first Bonsai when I was 15, I'm now 46. And yes quiete a few have died since, to repair the harm I've done to so many and to avoid others do the same I've been working on how to avoid this. Last year I collected 6 trees all alive with this method. I invited two friends who where very reluctant to believe in what they called my crazy method. They saw how I collected the trees, transplanted, etc. and in the summer came back to see the trees. They couldn't believe the massive amount of new leaves and branches the trees had. I have been working with "Mycorrysae" for the past 8 years,
There are basically three families of "Mycorrysae", "Endomycorrysae", "Ectomycorrysae" and "Ericoidmycorrisae" . So once you know to what Mycorrysae family your tree asociates it's easy. Just give it a try the next time you transplant a tree you will be surprised with the amount of new fine roots you will get. Where ever you cut old roots when transplanting with this method you will be creating a beautiful amount of new roots all around that root. But be careful"Mycorrysae" is not a miraculous product, you have to avoid some types of Pesticides, watering is very important I only use rain water and feeding the tree as well as you can kill the "Mycorrysae".

What kind of trees are we talking about and what climate zone do you live in?

I live in Barcelona, Spain. I'm talking of Pines, Junipers, Oaks, Viburnums or Madrones as some examples.

I'm interested in vance's planter box. Would like to see a photo of the underside if I may?

It looks exactly like one of the sides. In fact, if I remember it can be removed by pushing inward. Yes it does have screening... This is a beautiful piece of Workmanship by Vance!

Book. Not yet published, have not found a publisher and there are so many bonsai books out there right now I think mine might get lost in the shuffle.

Planter pictures to follow.

I have yet to see the definative book on mugos. From what I've read here, you have knowledge and experience that could bring out the best in these little pines. A book revieling the Vance Wood secrets on mugos for bonsai would be invaluable to this hobby, art, obsession.
