Roof Top Gardens
Here is a curiosity.
Last year I decided to leave my pursuit of winemaking to instead attempt to go to law school. I still enjoy growing things, but I am somewhat dissappointed that my new direction will likely take me away from Bonsai. I while waiting to hear back from schools I've been wondering what to do with my small collection. all the school I applied to are in urban areas, and likely the best job prospects are there as well. After years of living in suburbs, and in the southwest I'm quite tired of driving for an hour to get anywhere to do anything. I'm welcoming the opportunity of urban living. Since I would be limited in space, has anyone had any experience with roof-top gardening. Obviously the prospects are limited by constraints in space, the absence of soil in which to plant a tree in ground, and complete exposure to sun, or limited exposure due to other buildings. I'd like to start a discussion around the prospects and potential difficulties of growing bonsai in the urban environment, on a roof top. any thoughts are welcome. Cord |

I'm guessing that eposure to all the element could be a problem, not just the sun. You would probably need to provide shelter from strong, unbroken winds and ferocious rainfall. On the upside, i would imagine that pest problems would be less than at ground level, up out the way of ants, snails and squirrels.
This has provoked an intrest in me, now i need to figure out a way to attach my bonsai to that pesky slanted roof and have a go! lol Al

I can't comment on roof-top gardening, but I can offer a little insight into the world of growing bonsai with limited time and minimal space . . . I am a graduate student working on my Ph.D. in Clinical Neuropsychology AND I go to an urban school in the heart of Detroit.
In terms of time . . . you will find that while in graduate/law school, you MUST (I can't stress that enough) find time to do things COMPLETELY unrelated to school. Otherwise, you run the risk of burnout and insanity. For me, bonsai is a great escape . . . my tree's are there when I need to get away, but they aren't so demanding to consume a great deal of time when I don't have it. The key is to keep your collection small . . . I have 5 tree's which are kept indoors and maintained year round. All of these are simple, easy to keep, low maintenance species such as Ficus, Schefflera, etc. I also have a number of outdoor trees that really only require attention in the summer (beyond keeping them watered obviously). But the advantage is that your probably not going be in classes in the summer so you'll have the time to tend to those trees. As for growing, a nice sunny window or balcony will do well. I maintain all my tree's on a balcony in the summer, and under fluorescents in the winter. My tree's do quite well. I hope this has been helpful!
