Also, Mr. Bush has squandered so much money on this war he wants to cut the budget to the National Arboretum from $5 million to $3 million.

Check out the info on that story:

And sign on the online petition or send a real letter here:
Signing only takes less than two minutes and may make a difference - really!

I signed, who else will
How about we keep this a little less political? Even without the war, we must always be vigilant about funding for the arboretum. It's like art and music in schools, always in danger.

The good news is, the furor has been so great, that Congress people from all over the country have been inundated with concerned inquiries. I have it on good authority that the danger has passed for now.

Thank you, Chris. (That's all I'm gonna say about that.)

I went today - thanks to Rockm for giving me the heads up about it. I just couldn't believe the kinds of stock you could buy for such reasonable prices!

I ended up coming away with two big cork bark elms, a couple of bouganvillea, two junipers and a little jade tree. Am very happy and am looking forward to next year (though I might take another drive out there to see if anything else strikes my fancy).

I spent about five hours there yesterday, between the vendors, seminars and the Nat'l Bonsai Museum. I got some great stock for really good prices, but the real draw for me was tools, supplies and pots.

When I first arrived I ran across an excess book sale that the Arboretum was having in the lobby of the welcome center. There was a copy of Bonsai Techniques that I snatched up really fast. I was very happy to finally have a copy, and was glad to help the Arboretum. My wife was looking at it later and point this out to me on the inside front cover:

That's a treasure! Was it signed too?
Was there a fire sale at the Arboretum because of all the government budget cut?

I was wondering if these are commonplace! It seemed like the kind thing I would stumble onto, and knowing my luck there would be ten thousand of them laying around. Neat to find even if unsigned, I'm pretty pleased.

Nah, it wasn't crisis fire sale or anything. I asked the folks working the booksale and they said they were just selling off some of the older material to make room. They had tons of Bonsai Today back issues, plus a lot of beginners' books from the 70s. Lots of Better Homes and Gardens type material. Anyway, I got the feeling that they couldn't bring themselves to throw them out and held them until this weekend.

The Arboretum is far larger than the Bonsai and Penjing museums. That place is HUGE, all green space right in downtown DC. But the bonsai part is, in our eyes, the crown jewel of the Arboretum. I believe the National Bonsai Foundation is where a substantial portion of the bonsai museum's funds come from. If anyone noticed, there was a...mature lady sitting at a table in the center of the vendor tent mid-day Saturday. She was none other than Janet Lanman, a member of the NBF since the collection began in 1976. She was trying to sign up members and donors to help the cause. If you didnt see her, or missed the chance to enroll, go to NBF online and join. Give til it hurts! The trees in that museum are unbelievable. Some over 300 years old That's right. Unbelievable.
