Rocks?

Well i would like to do root over rock with one of my trees. If anyone could give me some ideas on rocks that look great and work best for this style it would be helpful.

Is it ok to use a rock that you find in your yard or does it have to be a special type of rock then just something you see everyday?

Stickboy,
I've used both. And I regret using any thing but a real real nice suiseki caliber stone. At first it seems cool just to do the technique, but then you get all these great trees with ugly, not interesting stones.

Look for some nice ones you won't regret it!

If you have an aquarium specialty store in your area, ask if they have any selected rocks for tank use. You may find something interesting there.

Look for stones with dark colors, interesting textures and grooves, nooks and crannies. When you are arranging the roots, you will usually bind the plant to the rock, which you have coated liberally with muck (a mixture of peat and clay) and then bury the whole thing, exposing it over time.

Be careful not to place all the roots into the grooves and channels. It may look natural for awhile, but the roots will cover all those interesting depressions, and then you'll have nothing!

If there is a rockery in your area that sells boulders, chances are there are some interesting bits and pieces there. I haven't found fieldstones to be that useful, generally, but there are exceptions. They sometimes have a product called lacerock that is very interesting, and there is a product called "featherrock" that is like a spun glass product that is a dark grey in color and soft enough to be carved with proper tools (and eye protection). I think there is an article in bonsaiTALK Links if you search on Feather

Manufactured stone like hypertufa (on the bonsaitalk home page) or Ciment Fondu stone can be made. Artificial rock slabs are even made from fiberglas.

I would steer clear of the generic red lava. It never looks right to me, unless you were planting Schefflera in Hawaii, where it would probably look perfectly natural.

Regards,

Matt

the black ones are actually a expensive Chinese rock. the others i'm not sure what they are but these pieces are actual comprised of many rocks cemented together! i use to think that most bonsai rocks where solid and found that way but most of the real good ones like this one are chiseled and cemented to perfection! look up some sites on Penjing try a google search and u will learn a lot about rocks.
