Rock Dust
I recently read in the New York Times that some garderners are adding rock dust to their soil with rather spectacular results, including (so they say) increased vigor and growth. Has anyone tried adding rock dust to their bonsai soil?

I haven't. What is "rock dust?"
I think I spend a lot of time sieving or washing rock dust out of my soil to improve its drainage. ![]() Regards, Matt

Matt,
Rock dust is the residue left after rock has been crushed, and the reason it is supposed to be useful is that it adds minerals to the soil that would not otherwise be available. Best Wishes, Mel |

Hi Mel,
Thanks for the clarification. If it is in fact dust, I'm thinking it might wash through pretty quickly. Fertilizer doesn't "hold" well in bonsai soil either. I could see it working well in a garden soil. It is important to consider that bonsai soil, being a soil-less mixture (for most of us), often needs minors. Where do you come by rock dust? I found this description online that discusses it, but not from any technical standpoint: http://www.invisiblegardener.com/ma...dust_framed.htm Regards, Matt

I wonder if by rock dust, they are refering to stone dust, a crushed granite produced. It is a residue of the gravel crushing and sifting, and used to pave driveways and walkways ( I have tons of it in use on my property). I also use it sieved as the aggrigrate in my bonsai soil mix.
