Right Time Of Year To Work On A Pine?
Is it better to do major work to a pine in the Winter, or early Spring? By "major work," I mean cutting off the top half of the tree. I'm wanting to form a new apex, and am wondering if it will harm the tree to do the work now?

Hi splinter,
You can do wiring on a pine this time of year....and perhaps some minor trimming, but I'd suggest you save the major trimming 'til spring....and at that time be sure to put cut paste on any major cuts. If you do much trimming now, they tree would probably suffer some die-back during the cold of the winter....and in the spring on those occasional warm days would also weep......so save the major cuts for spring...just before the great growth spurt. Hope this helps. Robert.......in Sta.Cruz

Thanks Robert - your reply helps. I will let the tree rest for the Winter, and do the cutting in the early Spring.
