Rhododendron Indicum

Heres a little azalea I have just gotten along with a few other different trees from a trade I made.

This one is about 18inches from soil to apex. It needs to be condensed down, or compacted if you will. I like the movement in the trunks and branches, however I wished that they were tighter and more compact. In due time. It is in need of a repot, and was in terrible shape. I havent done much to it, besides put it outside for about two weeks. Its former home was a university greenhouse, where it had lived for about 15 years. (Inside the entire time).

It began to flower last week. And is starting to show signs of rejuvination, however, with temps dropping now into the low 30's here, I am forced to bring it indoors and put into the grow room.

Your thoughts are welcomed.

Paul

Do you have a photo from the other side?

With two trunks of equal size, you'd logically remove the less promising one, either by pruning or air layer.

The one on the left in this view, but seen from the other side, looks like it might be more interesting.

Regards,

Matt

One way or the other

Here are a couple ideas for you. I can't see the full on front of the trunk green trunk on the right, so that may be an option.

The rootage will probably help determine the best possible course. Sometimes there are more than one layer of roots in pots like this, so check that out when you repot or carefully poking around with a chopstick.

BTW, this looks to be a Southern Indica Azalea, not a Satsuki Azalea.

Here's a link with some explanations:
