Resizing Photos

Treasure Coast Bonsai Society has recently switched from mailing there newsletter to e-mailing it. I am still having a few complications with it that I am working out. My biggest problem is resizing the photos so they will fit into an e-mail attachment. Does anyone know of a program that I can compress the size of the photos I put on the newsletter?

Also, to e-mail the newsletter I have had to convert it to a word document instead of a publisher file. This lowers the quality of the newsletter. Is it possible to convert a Microsoft Publisher file into an adobe acrobat reader file?

Hi...Treebeard turned me on to a little freeware program Irfanview. It does lots of wonderful things... it is free .. and very simple to use. Does have its limits, it will not allow good vertual work, but that said I thank Chris each time I use it......Irfanview.com

Hi Charles,
I have the Acrobat Distiller which allows me to save Word files as PDFs, but I don't see that option in Publisher. Why are your Word files of lesser quality? Maybe if you satrted with Word instead of converting from Publisher?? I've converted Word files to PDF with no problems.

It is hard to publish a newsletter using Microsoft Word. The quality of the newsletter is much lower. That is why I would prefer to see it made from Publisher instead.

Converting it just means saving it as a word file, then reorganizing the articles that it mixed up.

Charles, have you considered changing to Linux - many of the distributions are free and can be downloaded and include an abundance of free software for desktop publishing. GIMP is an excellent piece of free software for image manipulation. Take a look at
freshmeat.net (no www)
for daily listings of public domaain software.

You don't have to go quite that far with it. You can run GIMP in a Windows environment. Try a Google search on "GIMP FOR WINDOWS"

Matt

One of the greatest (and easiest) ever products to compress images, I ever tested was Image Optimizer.
It does different region JPEG compression interactively, alowing you to watch the changes in quality as the compression goes futher, and it is inteligent enough to know by itself which regions to compress more, while still allowing you to manually ajust it.

If you have photoshop cs or the newest version of elements then you also have imageready which is designed for optimizing photos for use on the internet or in e-mail

Know anyone whgos bought a new printer/scanner? Chances are there'll be a disk with photoshop LE that comes free. Once youve installed it you dont need the CD so they might part with it.
Other than that get Irfanview, its the business, is a small program and can play animations and sound files too!

Charles,

Yes, you can convert a publisher file to a pdf. I do it every month for the Cincinnati Bonsai club. I think you might even receive a copy of it already. I create the newsletter in Publisher and I know what a pain it is to try and reorganize the converted Word file.

Do a google search for Acrobat Printer driver. There are several free ones out there. I have tried several, there is a difference in the size of the pdf, but there are workarounds for that. Basically, installing the driver adds a virtual printer that outputs pdf files. I attach the file to an e-mail and also send it to a printer for those members that prefer hard copy.

Let me know if you have any questions.
