bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Repotting A Too Little Ficus

I was curious if I can repot the Too little Ficus I got during my bonsai class. I won't be doing any root pruning and basically will be adding volume by putting it in a slightly larger pot. I wasn't able to reduce the root mass enough during initial styling to feel comfotable with it in its current pot until next spring.

It can be seen here.

Regards,
Mark

As long as the tree is growing vigorously, and if you won't be root pruning again just putting it into a larger pot that would be fine. I believe the term for that is "slip-potting"

Just be careful though, the soil you have in there right now will still be pretty lose and most likely fall off and out of the roots rather easily. Either way, if the soil falls off just don't let the roots get dry and be gentle because the new root growth will be very fragile.

I would say go for it. The Too little isn't my favorite tree but it is a tough little bugger. It should do just fine.

Ron,
I read a recent post of yours and felt a bit discouraged about its future. After initial training it dropped all its leaves but 2. It has since sprouted many new ones so it appears to be healthy. I may give it another couple of weeks to give those roots a chance to grab some dirt. (couldn't seem to find a better way to put that at the moment. It is Friday and the beer is flowing!)

Regards,
Mark

I see you live in 5a. If repoted it would be wise to keep the humidty up to about 50% at least. The temp should be no less then 75 degrees F. It will be fine as long as it is watered and not allowed to dry out over the next few days.

Cre8,
From the description in your first post there would be no downside to doing what you said. By all means do it-No root work and larger pot, sure-- anytime. But its not an elm, don't expect super fast results. This plant take time and patience! Good luck
