repotting elm
Hello Curtis,
I see you are in the UK. Your seasons are similar to ours? It is now summer where you are? If so, now is not the ideal time to repot your elm. If it is in good health and doesn't seem to be suffering ill effects from the small pot, leave it until early spring next year. If it is looking bad, that is a too edged sword. Doing anything to an unhealthy tree at anytime is risky, doing it at the wrong time is worst of all. Can you tell us a little more about what condition the tree is in? susieq |

I agree if its in bad shape it will be risky but id do it to save the tree. If the pot was to small id simply lift the tree out and without disturbing the roots put it in a big nursery pot till winter or spring to put it back into a good bonsai pot.

Here is a comparison of two elm trees. The normal looking one was repotted trained and fed normally for 28 years. The one that looks like it is growing out of an exploded golf ball was trained and fed normally but never repotted in 28 years.
The non repotted one needed extra watering apparently often twice a day but no extra feeding. This shows that a tree can survive many years without repotting providing you give it extra watering. I might suggest dunking the pot to water to ensure it gets enough water. There is a summer repotting time when the growth of the tree has stopped but It can be hard to spot and not reckomended for beginers. You say the pot is too small this makes me think that you just want more room for the tree to increase growth or to improve the look. It is possible most any time of the year to slip the tree into a bigger pot. Even if this was to disturb the roots if they were loose in the soil it should be okay as long as you do not remove any roots. Early spring just before bud burst is the safest time to repot for many trees including the elm and is when the most drastic root pruning and manipulation is possible. As stated pictures will help in advising what you can acomplish at the moment.
