Ready For Winter (Thinking Ahead)

Dear All:
Yesterday morning, one of my friends came over and rebuilt the interior of my Tree House (as my wife calls it). That includes putting down indoor outdoor carpeting.
Four hours from start to finish.

Not that I am rushing the growing season, but I do hope that I will be able to find room for my forty some trees in this "U" shaped display area, when the temperatures starts to dip below 60 degrees! The bottom of the U measures six feet and the upper legs measures 8 feet. The width of the tops is Sixteen and a half inches.

The biggest problem I had was the area where the deck meets the Southern wall of our house. There is a gap of about a half inch. I wanted it cold-tight from the wind that would swirl up into the Tree HOuse defeating the purpose of my two heaters. MY friend suggested using liquid Stytrofoam. I was very careful laying down a small bead, but as expected it blossomed up, way above the floor level. I was able to take a knife and cut it as level to the floor as possible.
This first picture shows the blossomed Styrofoam and part of where I had already trimmed it.

This is the completed job looking north. The work table in the background was part of my original step display. It was cut down and will now be my repotting/work table.

By the way the deck measures approximately 16 feet by 8 feet.

Looks good Carl. What kind of heaters do you use to heat this room and what temp are you able to sustain?

I could sure use a room like that. My wife isn't so happy when I bring in all of my tropicals in the fall and take over 1/3 of our living room. But, she deals with it...lol

I would offer one word of caution with the foam, if that is an area where there's moisture, you'll want to guard against mold growing where you trimmed the foam. The foam as you probably saw is pourous where it was cut.

I have two milk house heaters. I obtained them from www.charleysgreenhouse.com

I also have a humidifer, and an oscilating fan, also from Charleys.

As fas as the mold, the styrofoam is totally covered with the indoor/ outdoor carpet...

I had trees in the living room for three or four years, but my trees outgrew the area and my wife came up with the idea of enclosing a deck, giving us back our living room.
Here's a picture of our living room taken in 1997.

Enclosing the deck was a great idea. My wife will have to live with my trees for a couple of more years. We're saving up to build a house. We're renting where we're at now. So doing anything major is obviously out. Plans for the new house include a heated greenhouse.

I'm a bit of a tropical nut. I love having trees to take care of during the long winters in Michigan.

We may not have the Michigan winters, but here in Southern NJ there are many dull days without any sun, but the best part about tropicals is that they flower all winter and when you walk out to your tree house (or green house) and there is snow on the ground, bright bracts on a Bougainvillea are like having the sun shining just for you.

Simnilar to this one!
