Rainy Day Chore

With all the rain that Francis seems to want to dump here I decided to get a little help from the storm.
I am pretty lucky where I am. Francis should swing a good ways to the west of here so just about all I will get is a bunch of the wet stuff. Not a lot of wind.
When I repot one of my larger bonsai the hardest part is getting the soil evenly wet when I am done. Well I do have a lot of that water falling outside ;o)
The second hardest thing is to just be able to pick the darn thing up and put it in the new pot.
In this case I will be putting this Black Olive ( large leaf variety Bucinda buceria) into a larger pot. Not a lot of root pruning so it should go pretty quickly.
Any way I am going to give it a try. Hopefully I won't break anything )

I'm drenched so its off to get into some dry clothes for me. Sorry no pictures of me changing.
In a couple of weeks I can start wiring this thing. I have had it for several years. Just cut it way back last month to get ready for the re-styling.

Hi Ron,

In Japan, there are frequent warnings about protecting trees from salt-laden hurricane rainfall. Now Japan is an archipelago, so maybe this is more of a problem. Is salt in the rain a problem where you live?

If so, it seems like it might be a good idea to water thoroughly to help flush out the salts...

Regards,

Matt

This tree is pretty salt tolerant. It was collected right next to the ocean in Florida about 10 years or so ago.
Don't think I would have tried this with another tree.

Went back through all my pictures to see if I had one that showed the tree before I chopped the heck out of it. Could not find any.
This tree has a lot of memories for me. It was the result of my very first attempt at a public bonsai demonstration. It was at Jupiter Bonsai and Jim Moody had egged me into doing it. He actually helped me do it.
There is a bit of dead wood about 1/2 way up the trunk that I took a die grinder to. Just sort of cutting away the rotted stuff while I was attempting to talk over all the noise the grinder was making.
Any way the more I cut the more people chuckled. Took me a while before I figured I had accidentally carved out a pigs head on the trunk.
I have had a lot of teasing over the years about that.
The funniest comment came from Jim Moody. He said he had given me my first big break and I had made a pig of a tree. Never seen him laugh so much.
Right after that we stopped being just business acquaintances and became fast friends. And he did give me another chance to stand up in public. No pigs heads the next time though.
