Question Raft Style juniper

Hi i have a quick question. Is it possible to combine two styles? I have a raft style that i did and i was thinking it would look pretty good in a windswept style, so is it possible to combine the two styles, and have a raft windswept?

Guess that could be done. Never seen one styled that way but can see no reason why it couldn't be done.

I always thought a raft would be cool with the illusion that wind first knocked the tree down and continued to batter the tree sweeping the branches as it grew new roots...

That was the image i had in mind as i was looking at this plant this morning. The wind first knocked the tree over then as the branches grew up the wind continued to beat the branches.

Exactly... Sweep the branches moving the same direction as the raft.

There is no problem in combining the two styles you mentioned in bonsai art. However, I think you perhaps do not understand the style classifications.

The raft (probably sinuous style) is a style of bonsai classified on how the tree is planted. Oher style classifications according on how the tree is planted include: Rock plantings (clinging-to-a rock, both vertical and horizontal, root-over-rock) clump and group planting styles.

Style classfication according to "feeling" because there is no one particular form include windsept, broom and literati styles.

Most people do not understand this classification and only refer to their bonsai as formal upright, informal upright, slanting and cascade style. But even these basic styles are classified on the trunk shape.

There are many more bonsai classifications, but the person who originally translated them from Japanese into English and organized the entire system was Yuji Yoshimura in the mid 1950s. A complete list of his classification system can be found in his book, The Japanese Art of Miniature Trees and Landscapes (now republished as "The Art of Bonsai", co-authored by Giovanna M. Halford, Tuttle Company, USA.
