Just a short note on lime sulfur. It is true that you can buy it in the quart size much more cheaply that you can by the 4 oz. size sold at most bonsai shops. Four ounces will last the average bonsai nut about 2 years. A quart will last you and several friends till Hailey's Comet decides to visit our solar system again.
The big problem with the quart size is crystallization. As soon as you open the bottle the sulfur attracts water. Next thing you know there is a big mess on the neck of the bottle and the cap is frozen on. Out of a quart you will be lucky to use 10%. But it is cheap.
Who cares if 90% is waste.
But then don't believe me. After all I am only one of those gougers that does in fact own a bonsai shop. I am only here to cheat you. I am just like those guys from Dasu Bonsai (sp) in Iowa. We are all crooks ;o)
In the meantime I sincerely hope that you find a source for the stuff, at a proper concentration for use in bonsai. But if you can't then let me know and I will do what I can to help you.
Trust me, why would I lie to a person like you. We after all are buddies in bonsai ;o)
I am after all only here to serve
Good God now I need a beer. Or maybe since yesterday was the 4th I need a 5th

You'll do better with see-throughs. Specially since you live in the "world's largest airline'

(For those who haven't visited Ron, a reference to SC's liquor laws which require that bar drinks be served out of airline bottles) It's okay, though, the company is worth it. Besides, his local Applebee's (across the street) has a bartender whose name is pronounced Serissa (Her real name is Suresa, and she's a LOVE!)

Let's see. I'm on my third year with a pint bottle (lime sulphur, that is). This stuff lasts even longer than vermouth!

Regards,

wow, what a small world. dave and sue lowman are very nice people, and i understand that they, as well as you ron, have to make a living. and if that means marking certain items up, then so be it. i'll probably buy the lime sulphur from them just to help keep them in business. and that should be everybody's way of looking at it.

Not really small but most of us in the bonsai business know each other in one way or the other. After all there isn't all that many of us. And it does seem like there are fewer of us every year.
A lot of those shop owners, teachers and artists are now truck drivers, cooks, grass mowers etc. I know one that now greets people when they enter Wall-Mart.
It is a tough business to be in. For some reason most of the bonsai people think that we are there just to rip them off. A lot of people buy their trees at K-Mart etc. and then bring them to the closest bonsai shop to find out how to take care of them. They want us to style them but mention a fee for this and they get upset.
About the only time we are a bit important is when there is a convention. The organizers come running asking for donations for the raffle table and big bucks to rent a table in the vendors area. And a "Oh by the way will you do a free demo for us"
But I am not complaining. Venting a bit maybe.
Like I have said before bonsai has been good to me. I can't really complain. But I can understand why there are fewer of us every year.
There are some good people out there running those shops. They do deserve a break.
Some of them are desperately needed bonsai teachers. Sue and Dave are among the better ones.
I'll get off my soapbox now and shut up.
