You don't have to import it. The bonsai shops have most of the things you need. Try a web search for them.
Both NJ and Iowa have shops ;o)

Agreed once again, Ron.

I was thinking in terms of non-US readers.

BTW, the Material Safety Data Sheet can be found at:

Okay, there is some offered on eBay. 4 oz for $2.99 plus $2.75 postage. NOT cheap!

I have dealt with this seller. He is reputable, and seems to generate some of his income by buying large bottles of bonsai products and repackaging them. As I recall, he sells the same amount of no-nitrogen fertilizer for the same price. Most garden centers will sell you a liter of the same product (Alaskan) for $10. Ron may well be less.

That seems a decent markup, what with the cost of bottles and handling, but I'm not motivated to compete with him.

I tried a google search on "bonsai supplies" and, while I found plenty of shops, going to their web sites did not turn up lime sulphur.

Probably a combination of low profit margin and relatively high shipping cost.

i know very well that ALL bonsai shops carry it. need i remind you that i live in RURAL IOWA. there isnt a bonsai shop for 80 miles. and my bonsai-master-from-afar told me that the guy at the shop buys the big bottles for like 6 bucks and bottles them in smaller bottles and sells them for $10!! he told me to go to the nearest garden center and find a cheap big honkin' bottle. i dont really feel like paying 10 bucks for a bottle and 7 bucks for shipping with ordering online when i'm positive i can find it in a 6 dollar big bottle form. and the shipping and handling will be my $1.25 in gas for the trip there and back to the nearest city.

Okay, Nick.

I understand your problem.

I also undertand your frustration with us having an academic-style discussion, while you NEED THE DARN STUFF!

[make eye contact here]

If you do a google search on "lime sulphur" you'll get 30 some thousand hits. Do a search within that on "Ortho" (Not that I know they make it, but it should reduce the number of non-dealer hits).

One I found, not that I know anything about them, led to

http://www.usahardware.com/inet/sho...roups/32186.htm

They are offering it at $10 bucks a quart. (Dunno the concentration)

Now using this, try calling your local non-chain garden center (There's a reason for keeping these little guys in business!), and ask them to Special Order it for you. (That may save you the postage).

If all else fails, then order it online.

A Google search under "Lime Sulphur" and then search within results on "Iowa" turned up this page:

http://www.linnextension.org/mg/public/austree.htm

It contains the phone number of Iowa state university extension service for Linn County (How close is that to you?)

While they are not talking bonsai, they do recommend the use of Lime Sulphur. Call and ask them where to get it in retail quantity (You really don't want to buy a barrel, do you?). If they say "any garden center", ask them for specific suggestions.

p.s. A lot more hits can be found if you spell it "sulfur"
