A question about rep points

Not that I am concerned about points or anything, but I was wondering what the little boxes next to the comments mean. Some are green and some are grey . . . what does the color mean? Anything?

Green are positive points, grey are neutral or negative...I think.

Red are negative points.

It's our Pavlovian way of rewarding for good posts, information or attitudes. When you go to the member list you can click on the word reputation and it will sort members by rep points earned.

If you click on the white scales next to those boxes, you can give points as you see fit.

Red can also be punishment for good posts.

I still don't know how to link to another thread, and my computer savvy kids are asleep, but if you search the forum using the words "reputation points" you will find some posts about them where Matt explains them. (apparently as well as they CAN be explained, they are fairly complex)

The grey ones are possibly a negative from someone who doesn't have a very good accumulation of reputation themselves. The system takes into consideration the karma of people who are much more interested in tweaking people's noses than they are for rewarding people....so if they give you a negative, the Magic Rep Point Fairy swishes his rainbow wand and makes it grey. Or something like that. (Please correct this if it is wrong) I've had two greys and they were both apparently meant to be negatives but were, in the cosmic scheme of things, converted by Karma into neutrals.

A real, serious negative is bug-bite red. You'll know when you get one. It will itch a while. The remedy is not to think about it, don't scratch it, just pretend it didn't happen. But think twice when you wander into that part of the woods again!! (I'm not saying don't go there, mind you, just think about it really hard first.)

The really aggravating thing about the rep system is the inability to "override" it so that you can give the same person more rep without first having to "spread it around". I understand the reason for this, but it does get annoying for those of us who give it sparingly. Arrrrgggghhhhh!

funny thing about rep at a bonsai forum -- I get better rep responses for silly postings than I do for actually posting pictures of trees and discussions of technique or horticulture ...

I'm not a big fan of the rep system. I much prefer it when comments are made (good or bad) in an open forum. That way the one making the comments are as responsible for their words as the one who posted to the forum in the first place.

I gave some thoughts on our reputation system, advice, and critiques on this thread.

Unfortunately the thread was closed awhile back, so adding to it is impossible.
