Punica Granatum
Has anybody heard of a Punica granatum that does not flower?
I have two small guys and one is loaded with scarlet folwers while the other older tree shows not one flower bud, and no, I have not pruned it back, knowing all too well that the flowers mainly form on the tips of each branch....Soooo.... IF anyone can tell me what to do about this I would be a very happy fella indeed. Nigel ![]()

Brent,
Both came from Japan, both shohin, one broom styled [in flower] the other an exposed-root, both outside, both extremely healthy, both growing in akadama, if they were seedlings it was a long time ago. Nigel

Next question: Are they dwarf types, or the larger double flower types? What is their physical size, both height and caliper? Does the foliage and growth habit appear identical? Brent |

I'll do a couple of pics early next week, then you can see for yourself but I understand that they are both dwarf forms, the foliage on the tree in question has longer leaves. Nigel

Some forms are reluctant to flower. I have one, reputedly from a twisted trunk tree, that almost never flowers, but occasionally does throw a few flowers. I have no idea what the trick is. I ask about seedlings because the dwarf forms are notorious for giving rise to individuals that are wildly different from the parent plant. I will watch for your pics. Brent |

It may be my imagination, but mine seem to flower better with some early, very hot weather.

Well guys here are the two pics:
PIC ONE Punica granatum - “Nana“ - (perhaps) “Alba Plena“ . [#1] Exposed-root [NE-AGARI]. Pruned height, 26cm [10 ¼“]. Punica granatum - “Nana”. [#2] Broom [HOLIDACHI]. Pruned height, 14cm [5 ½“]. Genus: Puniacaceae. Common name: Pomegranate. Dwarf Pomegranate. Particular characteristics: Deciduous. The pomegranate is a small shrubby tree, with a very unequal trunk, and shrubby branches which sometimes bear thorns. The leaves are opposite, entire, oblong or lance-shaped, pointed at each end, smooth, shining, of a bright green color. Around 1 to 5 flowers are seen growing in terminal or axillery clusters. These come in three different colours of white, yellow and red. The petals are formed in two whorls and have many wrinkles. Nigel ![]()
