Aluminum foil around the pot will help with that.

What is the problem? Is it the the temp of the pot or is it really that hot inside the pot? How much tolerance for heat do roots have?

The problem is that dark colored pottery heats up in the sun. A little above 100 degrees F, the roots shut down and stop absorbing water. The leaves keep on going because they aren't quite so warm. Until they start to run out of moisture, then you might start to see "burnt" tips. If it gets much hotter than that, you might see the roots on the exterior edges of the rootball - closest to the pot - begin to die and that could lead to root rot.
Brent has a page on his site that's worth checking: http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/rootheat.htm This is interesting too, in a tangential sort of way: http://www.rosevilletrees.org/faq/faqDamage.html#2

A white towel wrapped around the pot and all will reduce the heat and allow you to water through it as well as holding moisture in a little better.

The last ABS Journal has a good article/research on this from Dr. Cody of Texas.

You could try an emergency blanket too. Its a peice of super reflective milar. They cost about two bucks and are found at camping stores. Just tape it on with the inside facing out.
