Nice trees Hans, in light of a recent thread; do you keep moss on that pine all the time or just for display lol!

Morning to you al,
i just woke up after a all nighter, and it is great to read all your stories with a nice cup of thee!
Yes i do keep the moss on as long as it looks good and if it is of the right kind!
Because of the soil mix i use there are no problems to be expectit with the tree staying to wet.
When the tree wil be showed in 2 years the ground surface will look very natural and matured, witch to me is very importend, I think it is such a shame to see a nice bonsai that has been taken care of for many years, being showed with fresh soil and moss that has just been put on.
Keep on posting your positive stories,
Thanks so far,
Hans van Meer.

[QUOTE=PatArizona]About my friend at the University Nursery...

After some passage of time...my friend passed away. I found out about it when I stopped by the nursery and found it locked up.

To this day, I cannot remember my friend's name.

I got a Gingko at that time and dedicated it to her memory. So every time I am in my green house, which is every day, I see it and think of her. I call it my "Vicky Gingko." I often wonder how often I would think of her if it weren't for my bonsai tree.

Sad but positive.

Peace
Bob

Hi Bob,
"Vicky Gingko" has a very nice positive ring to it!
Thanks for charing,
Hans van Meer.

That was a very touching story, Pat. Thank you for sharing.

Pity that money can't buy brains or the willingness to learn

Here's another one...

Sometime during the late 1950s, I dug up a very small Oak from a country roadside. Miraclulously it survived. I worked with it and finally got it into a round 4" X 3" shohin pot. I didn't even know what a shohin was at the time.

This little Oak looked nice, during it's ocassional stay, on our coffee table. Until one day when my 2 year old daughter sat down on it...broke it off right at the soil level. WOW!!

I decided that it was worth the effort to baby it along and see if it would sprout again. To my surprise, it did.

About 2 years later, my Oak was about 6" tall, pot and all, and I entered it in the bonsai show at the Alameda County Fair...it won a Blue Ribbon!

Mind you, this show featured sticks in pots and other wannabes, and based on the quality of the competition, my little Oak deserved the award...well, it was the only entry in it's size category. I still didn't know what a shohin was!

When I went to pick up my bonsai on the last day of the fair...my little Oak was gone...along with the blue ribbon. I hoped for years, that whoever stole my Oak thought that they had stolen a masterpiece.

I never showed again until 2000, after my "rebirth" into bonsai...a total restart after moving to Arizona...after joining my first club, my very first class, and my very first workshop.

And, so it goes...

Pat
