Pond water?

Would water from an ornamental pond be good for trees?

I have a small pond with frogs, fish and some algea in it.

Would the water be a good source of nutients or would it be bad?

Just wondering?

Wink pond water

depends how large the pond is and how much water you will take out per day as opposed to what will be replaced. if you have frogs and fish and algae, reducing the water level will heat up the body of water. this will cause increased algae growth and less oxygen in the pond, this often means death for other life in the pond.

ps. dont top up the pond with town water. if it is chlorinated, this will also kill off life in your pond.

if you want unchlorinated water, fill a old bath tub or similar with town water and leave it for 24 or more hours and most/all of the chlorine will burn off and *****PRESTO***** fresh water mostly/totally free of chemicals

As long as you have not been adding salt to the pond (some people regularly ad salt thinking it helps with fish health) pond water is great for watering your bonsai.

Many ponders use their weekly water change to water their gardens and flower beds.

I agree with Robert. I use lot of salt to keep my Koi from disease and my pond from string algae at concentration 0.25%. Because of this, I don't use my pond water for my tree. Otherwise, pond water is a great source of nutrition llike organic fertilizer. Bonhe

if you want unchlorinated water, fill a old bath tub or similar with town water and I top up my pond with tap water without any chlorine problem. You have to know how to do it ;-). I have automatic system (whenever water level goes down to some level, then water starts to fill up the pond until a decided level approached) with water in spray mode on the surface of pond. With this, chlorinated water will much less chlorine. My kois are very healthy anyway. Bonhe

I love to water my bonsai from the pond (In particular when I clean out the pond filter) But I have a large pond, with a good filter on it, my trees thrive on this. I top the pond up once a week with tap water, however, going on the size of the pond, the clorine is negated almost instantly.

In the past, when I had smaller ponds, I cleaned them out, and if I topped them up with fresh tap water, I invariably killed the fish.

I know other people, who take a bucket out every morning, and put a bucket of tap water in, and they don't seem to have any problems, I guess it all comes down to how much water you wish to use daily. If you wanted to, you could get a couple of nappy buckets, fill them with tap water, leave three days (time it takes the clorine to disapate) and use that for topping up the pond (You could stagger the filling standing etc.)

good luck

Thanks everyone, guess my trees will start getting a little pond water now and then.

When the pond gets a little low (with all the rain we have had, its not been low lately), I top it of with water from our well. We live in the country and do not have city water.
