What do you mean?
I'm not sure what you mean by what kind of contest. Do you me a styling vs restyling, new material vs old, or essay vs photo?

I voted for the forest/group contest.I think the 50$ max limit for supplies and trees is good and the old rule about having no pre-worked material is best.I also think all supplies should be purchased within the contest dates...none of those old special projects and so forth...all new materials.

copied from the other thread:
I would like to see a constant running contest, perhaps on a semi-annual basis. Like May-Oct, and Nov-Apr (submissions accepted anytime during the contest open period), with the contest judging to be at the last week of the last month. Because you run them semi-annually, both halves of the hemisphere can be involved. It would just be Spring entries for one, and Fall entries for the other, but the mix, if we get enough entrants can make it quite interesting. Contestants could enter as many as they would like. The major guideline is that the entry would be styled by the contestant. It would have to be an honor system, as there would be no way to verify this. You could have two levels of experience ( 0-3 years, and 4+ years). This way you can have two winners. The competition ( after all it is a contest), would have no real prize, just peer recognition. Maybe a section on the forum main page with the contest winners for the particular season's contest are displayed. The reason I like this, is it gives both the novice, and the more advanced among us a contest, with a goal to shoot for. It would also promote artisitc bonsai, maybe with a little luck we could get some of the more notable names to compete? Still the novice's (myself included) can compete as well. Obviously the novice winner's bonsai won't look nearly as good as the more experienced entrants, but it still gives us something to strive for. But if you are a novice, and you win based on a judging from your peers, this is certainly something to be considered noteworthy. The entry would be based on design and presentation. Which means you have to create a good bonsai, and take a good picture of it in order to have a chance to win. Well, just a thought anyway.

Not to quibble, but I wish I could have voted on more than one option. I liked the duality of having a styling contest and then right after that an article contest. I'd have entered the article contest, but couldn't come up with anything I thought was interesting that hadn't already been covered in articles in the archive (no wheel re-inventing, ya know).
I don't have an idea on how it should be done, but it might be different to have a collector's contest. Pics from the discovered tree still in the ground, a "during the dig" pic, and an after it's in the pot/growbox pic. I guess it would have to be a couple or three years down the road before you could post styled pics...just thinking out loud and erratically...where is that bottle of meds?!?!?!? |

If you are in the northern hemisphere, I don't think now (fall season) would be the best time for deciduous style forests. Of course the guys in Oz might just be all over this idea.

I think us in the west do have enough time. This is October and the contest is to run until like the end of March.Thats gives everyone at least 5 months to put something together.By the end of March trees are in leaf for most of the country.

Will, All,
How about a twist on two of the options. These could even run side by side, with two prize pools and one can either enter one or the other, or even both! Phase 1. Photographic competition: - Preparation, Lighting and taking a picture of a tree. Perhaps a maximum of three pictures per entrant. Could be 3 point, single tree on stand, tree on good base and backdrop etc... The best individual photograph, not necessarily the best tree/display wins. Phase 2. Virtual competition: - Taking any of the submissions in Phase 1 or any of your own, then providing a before shot - then one virtual of how you would re-style it, place in another pot or display environment etc.... The best transformation wins. The beauty of this type of thing is actually using processes that many members will use in every day use here on the forum, or will certainly benefit from, by getting their teeth into it or practicing. Also, generally, no harm should come to any tree ! Just some ideas. . . . . Ian. Last edited by Ian_Homer : 5-Oct-2005 at 07:30 PM. |
