Poll: Stealing Trees

I thought that with the recent self justifications on theft, collecting without permission, and such, this poll (anonymous) will shed some light on the state of our minds...Please choose all that apply.

Will, you should work on polls for political parties! The questions are a leeeetle slanted, doncha think?

If you really wanted to get the true flavor of everyone's sentiment, you could have added:

I take small seedlings from areas where they are obviously not going to survive, (such as the side of the road which is mowed one a year) or where the land is untended and the seedling is one of many.

( I am NOT justifying that, just pointing out that people possibly more lenient towards that particular circumstance, and the question would give a truer picture of how everyone thinks)

Oh, and if you took the "and feel that those who do should be severely punished" needs to come out of the first question, or make it two questions....

I never collect without permission.

I never collect without permission and feel that those who do should be severely punished.

Such a seperation of that two-part question would allow people who have their own standards, but are less likely to judge and censure others, an option.

No-one knows who owns the woods next to my house, people have tried to buy them before and no-one can find out. The colonies of ash in the woods are somewhat unsightly in some areas so i will take the odd ash, they are only from places where it is not obvious and i try and plant an oak or birch in the place of the tree i have taken. Some places have great problems with ash as a weed and we have that here, thousands come up every year so i feel that the odd one isnt going to make a difference and i only collect them if i can see a good future for them, no point collecting stuff that you cant see a future for.

Regards
Rowan

I would not consider going on anyone's property and helping myself to a plant or a nice rock without explicit permisson any more than I would going in to their house taking their VCR.

There are always circumstances that may mitigate this absolute. If after extensive searching no owner can be found to ask for permission, it will be down to your own sense and judgement.
The least you can do in a situation like that is to leave a note of intent or a note explaining that you have tried to find out who the property belongs to and leave everything as you have found it. (I have done so many times myself and in one case the owner actually contacted me and invited me to take what I wanted as he was going to clear the plot for building.)

There is a nice signature on this forum that says: "Do on to others as you would have them do onto yourself". Never a truer word spoken.

Stealing a tree, purposefully planted is one thing. It's not on the poll whether stealing, digging, collecting, taking a wild born tree on land is wrong. I debate this issue in my head all the time.

Well, I was about to post a VERY funny limerick making fun of Will, but have thought twice because I don't want to disrupt the reasonable and thoughtful tone of the current discussion. Guess I'll just have to enjoy it by myself.

I guess, speaking for myself, I'm not going to vote on the poll because I couldn't find a selection that seemed to express my views. A shame because it's an important subject. I've eenjoyed the responses.

If it is not yours and you take it, be it purposefully planted or growing in the wild, it is wrong.
