Ron,
For most of us, bonsai is just a hobby. Just as we've always done, we'll do as much as we can afford. I buy supplies from the bonsai professionals that have the most direct impact on me personally. Bonsai Northshore, Livingart Bonsai, Treebay, etc. I'll go outside of this circle if they can't fill some specific need, like a particular pot. A lot of times I could get things cheaper on the internet, delivered to my door, but it's in my own self interest to deal locally. Bonsai would not be nearly as fun if I couldn't get in my truck (a 4 cyl Toyota, 27 mpg), drive the fifty miles (one hour, one way) to spend a day at the bonsai nursery.... or get online and hang out with you guys on BonsaiTalk. If we have less to spend on bonsai, we just have to be more careful where we spend it. Best Regards, David BTW...is anybody going to Brussell's Rendezvous in May?

A few days ago I was talking to my friend Carl about the current prices on gas. He is a fisherman and does own his own boat. Guess most of you know how those contraptions can burn the old petroleum.
I asked him how he would contend with the rising prices and his devotion to that boat. He is a simple man and his answer was also simple. "I'll cope" Not a bad way to look at things I guess. Not full of answers but at least a workable solution. He did always seem to have a good answer. Retired military and for the most part was use to things being beyond his means. No big deal. A lot of us have sailed that boat. Point being is Carl never let anything get him down. No matter what happened he had that "cheerful smile and a positive attitude" Most of us understand that but few of us really live it. He did. Earlier this evening his wife called me. Seems like the police found him slumped over in his boat floating down the Ashley River. Dead apparently of a massive heart attack. Not all together a sad thing. After all if you have to go you might as well go while doing something you love. Tomorrow I'll deliver his eulogy (at least part of it) Not sure what I will say. Haven't had a lot of time to think about it. Maybe I'll just talk about coping. I do wish that all of this was just some sort of parable. A way to make a point. Its not. It is just a crying shame. Carl had the right answer even if no one listened. I might take a few days off. I kneed a break |

Sorry to hear of your friend, Ron. Somehow it reminded me of a guy I knew many years ago who died of a heart attack while running a marathon. One of our mutual friends said that he had died while doing what he loved. What could be better?
